This article will show you how to install and setup Wine, mount CD images, and create scripts to auto launch your games thus allowing you to access your Windows games from your EmulationStation setup!!! Some games are more compatible with Linux and Wine than others. The first step is that you should check and see the level of compatibility of the game on the Wine AppDB.

There may be for specific instructions or steps required to install or run your application beyond what we can cover in this post. You will need to make sure that you are using the most up to date graphics drivers. You should also consider updating any other not display drivers. The first setup, predictably, is to install Winethe Windows emulator for Linux. Based on which installed version of Ubuntu based operating system you are running, you will then need to use one of the following commands:.

Ubuntu You can now run winecfg to configure your Wine installation. Set the parameters to your liking. There is one setting that you will need to ensure it not enabled: ensure that the game does not launch in virtual desktop mode as this will screw up display, etc. You can find this on the Graphics tab as shown below. Usually you are going to be installing the game from a CD.

If you are using an. To mount, first create the directory i. Next we need to mount the CD. The following command assumes the. Finally we need to tell Wine to run the setup file on the install CD. Follow the install process as you would typically would when installing in Windows. Once complete the game will be ready to run. Run it and make sure the game is working that way you want before proceeding to the next step.

You will now need to create a script to run from EmulationStation RetroPie. To do so, you will need a few things. First, when you installed the game above, likely a link was placed on your Ubuntu desktop.

It should look something like below:. You will need to take this and put it in the script you are creating. This is not necessary but increases the flexibility of moving to other systems as needed.

The script you are creating will have an. You can also use the nano editor from the command line. The second thing you will need to decide is whether or not you want the script to use the traditional mount command. The plus is it is a bit simpler. The con, is that you will have to enter your sudo password every time you use the script to launch a game.

Here is an example of a script that uses the traditional mount method:. However, my understanding is that this comes with serious security risks in that anybody could mount their own image and use it to compromise your system.

Many thanks to all the individuals who have contributed to the idea of running Retropie on an Ubuntu server distribution. Most of the discussions regarding this topic can be found in these threads:. I will post some video of the installation as well and the end product as soon as I have them. This is a 'living' how-to that is divided into 3 sections:. Perform reboot.

Retropie should now be up and running. What i was looking for tbh. A big thank you for your trouble and one question.

I'll take a look but I am FAR from a linux expert. I only gathered the information that I found and ran with it. Is all that is required is to add the PPA and do a dist-upgrade? Any configuration changes need to take advantage? My own use case was only ever intended for arcade games so I probably won't see any improvement. Depends on GPU.

When mesa Last time i tried this i had screen tearing all over and was an unpleasant experience. No, issue was all over the place. In emulationstation when you swap around systems or in games. You could see a screen tearing issue and was very pita. If you have it or not you will know as is very obvious to catch it with your eyes.

I will test soon this installation and get back to you. Added a video to the OP that shows game launching without terminal windows, mouse pointers, etc. Out of interest, given that an installation on Ubuntu on an x86 system effectively sidesteps the performance limitations of the Raspberry Pi, would it be feasible to install and use one of the newer MAME versions? I understand that it'd have to be called directly, rather than through retroarch, so there might be a bit more fiddling to get controls working, but it could potentially allow for running of some of the newer arcade games that MAME and don't support, right?

I'm using current MAME 0. However, the core that is compiled using the experimental package crashes. I reecently added lr-mame to my Peppermint OS desktop build and today decided to upgrade to Mame 0.
